Question 1. How does Solomon’s love for a luxurious and extravagant lifestyle parallel our world today?
The quest for a luxurious and extravagant lifestyle has permeated our media and entertainment sources and has led many people to equate indulgences in material and pleasurable acquisitions and activities with success, in American society at least. King Solomon expresses the futility of such attitudes and behaviors in Ecclesiastes, and his “wisdom” can be applied in our contemporary lives. I recently listened to a lecture by anthropological theologian Michael Welker who said that many people in the Western world have no conception of how the greatest of God’s blessings come our way, such as food, clean water, health, and so on, and therefore have no sense of gratitude for the gifts that make our lives most meaningful. I believe there is a caution here to remain connected to a very basic knowledge and simple joy so that we can appreciate the wonders that God has created and the powers that He has made possible in our earthly bodies and environment.
