Question 3. Regarding their call and vision, what other biblical characters are you drawn to? What attracts you to their story?

One character I admire from the New Testament accounts is Priscilla who, especially considering the role of women in her culture, must have been remarkable. In biblical references to her, she is fully equal to her husband Aquila, with both supporting the ministry of the apostle Paul. They taught others about Christ by operating a church in their home in Rome and Ephesus and providing a place of hospitality and sanctuary to others, including to Paul himself. She and Aquila ran a tent-making business together, and Paul at times joined her and her husband in the craft of making tents, so it is clear that she is honored for the work of her hands. As well, she had a deep knowledge of Scripture and when she and her husband traveled with Paul, she is fully acknowledged for her efforts as an evangelist.

In her work ethic, service, relationships, generosity, knowledge, character, and faith, Priscilla exemplifies a person who was completely devoted to Christ in all aspects of her life. Her call and full commitment to her vision helped to establish the early church and has assured generations of believers within the Christian faith that the place of women is equally valued in the eyes of God. Considering the daily prayer for Jewish males, then and now, includes thanking God for not making them a Gentile, a slave, or a woman, Priscilla’s story illustrates just how radical Paul’s regard for her was (and still is today). The parallel in Paul’s message in Galatians 3:27-28 is striking: “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (NIV). The inclusion of Priscilla’s work in the apostle’s writings underscores the inclusiveness of the love of Christ.

    Blessings
